Heuristic Decision Engine
Software componentCognitionCognition & Memoryarc:HeuristicDecisionEngine
A decision engine that applies simplified heuristic rules keyed on a few salient features to reach good-enough decisions quickly, trading guaranteed optimality for speed.
Responsibility. Returns fast approximate decisions for routine cases using heuristic shortcut rules.
Also known as: Heuristic fast path, Heuristic triage
Variant of Decision Engine abstract
When to choose. Choose when real-time decisions must be made in milliseconds and a 'good enough' answer is acceptable, and when the heuristic's systematic bias causes minimal harm in the context (e.g., routine, clear-cut cases).

Design guidance
- SHOULD be matched to contexts where the heuristic's bias causes minimal harm (e.g., satisficing when optimisation cost exceeds its value, lexicographic when objectives have a natural priority order).
- SHOULD escalate borderline or high-stakes cases to careful multi-rule evaluation.
Quantitative guidance
As stated by the sources; verify before use.
- Heuristics correct ~95% of the time in microseconds often beat slower methods achieving 98% accuracy (Ch5.11).
