State Concurrency Controller
Software componentOrchestrationOrchestration & ToolsVariation point (abstract)arc:StateConcurrencyController
A coordination mechanism that keeps shared workflow state consistent when multiple agent instances update it concurrently.
Responsibility. Serialises or reconciles concurrent updates to shared workflow state.
Also known as: Distributed state coordination
Variants
| Variant | When to choose |
|---|---|
| CRDT State Merger | Choose when state must converge regardless of the order of concurrent updates. |
| Optimistic Lock Controller | Choose when instances can detect conflicting updates and retry them. |
| Pessimistic Lock Controller | Choose when instances must hold exclusive access before modifying state. |
Relationships
Design guidance
- MUST be introduced when state is distributed and several instances may update the same workflow state.
Quantitative guidance
As stated by the sources; verify before use.
- Concurrent writes caused 25% of coordination failures (20 traces; ~10/day) (Ch8.2A).
Classification

- Reliability (ISO/IEC 25010 | NIST AI RMF: valid and reliable)Performance efficiency (ISO/IEC 25010)
- Risks mitigated
- Lost or conflicting concurrent state updates
